back to reality

I really enjoyed my devacation last weekend.  Of course, it was great to see Linh, and I finally got to meet her very tiny dog, Stella (who I often called Lilz, little one, or Stellz).  In the 3 full days I was there, we managed to hit up the Bahamas for about 3 hours, spend 12 hours on a ship, see Star Trek (highly recommended), drive to Ft. Lauderdale a zillion times, get stuck in traffic on I95, lose money at the Hard Rock Casino (just me – not Linh),  hit up South Beach and Lincoln Road between thunderstorms, and sleep as little as possible.  And on Sunday, I made it to the airport with 15 minutes before my flight departed, and somehow made it through security in under 5 minutes.

Oh – and did I mention it rained almost the entire time?  Yeah.

All in all, it was a fun time.  I will be catching up on sleep this weekend.

So.  Here I am, back in the NYC.  Bring on the month of June.

The nice thing about June is that I don’t have a single thing planned.  That’s probably because I’ve been too busy to plan something, but it’s nice to have an open schedule.

In other news, one of my roommates is moving out.  If you know someone who needs a place to live in the Big Apple, let me know.  Rent is only $740-ish + utilities.  In the meantime, there should be a craigslist posting in the next few days.  I really can’t wait to find a new roommate.  I’m also excited about buying furniture I can’t afford and decorating this apartment (with other things I can’t afford).  I see multiple trips to Ikea in my future…

surprises

So, Emily and Melissa stopped in this weekend…

And so did Linh.  From effing Miami.

Except no one told me.  Her comment was, “did you think I was gonna let you guys hang out without me?!”  Crazy Linh…

I completely flipped out when Linh walked into my apartment.  I normally don’t scream like a 5 year old girl when I get surprised, but I definitely screamed and waved my arms around when I saw Linh.

It was a 4747 Lambeth reunion – and it was awesome.  Thank God for that extra blow up mattress.

Here’s my weekend of fun in pictures:

second row

We got 2nd row seats for Guys and Dolls thanks to Linh.  Incredible.  Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat was one of most amazing songs I’ve ever heard on Broadway.

LG

omg.  Lauren Graham.  She’s one of the the reasons why we saw the show.  Surprisingly, she has a good voice.

Cyclone

We took a ridiculously long train ride to Coney Island, in search of the Coney Island Market.  It doesn’t actually start until May 15th.  My bad.

Sideshow

Yep, the sideshows are still there.  Coney Island is still a freak show.

hot dogs

Hot dogs!  We each ate one.  They were tasty.

Sweets
Candy

Then we hit up a few sweet places for cupcakes and candy.  It’s really hard for us to pass up sweets.

Serendipity

That’s Em hiding behind Seredipity 3’s extra large menu.  Our 11pm dinner was really tasty.  I highly recommend the ham and brie sandwich.  And the frozen hot chocolate, of course.

Oh – and we saw Little Ashes.  Emily wanted to see it because of Robert Pattinson (aka. Edward from Twilight).  Definitely worth the $12.  PS: Javier Beltrán is crazy hot.

Whoops, one more picture:

Ping Pong

That’s the ping pong table (at Fat Cat) where Em and I both schooled Melissa in 3 awesome ping pong matches.

So, my weekend was pretty freakin’ awesome.  Me and my B’s :)  I miss them already.

I would not recommend living with 5 other women in a tiny 3-bedroom apartment.  It’s such a bad idea.

Think: syncing periods, hair EVERYWHERE in the bathrooms (we had two – but it didn’t help much), out of control estrogen attacks (aka. mood swings), etc.  What a nightmare.

It made for an interesting (sorta) 3 years at UVA.  But I made some really good friends in the process.

May is the month of 4747 (my UVA address for 3 years was 4747 Lambeth) roommate visits.  Get excited.

This weekend, Emily and Melissa are coming.  On very rare occassions do I see one without the other.  And very rarely do I say “Melissa and Emily” – it just doesn’t flow.  It’s Emily and Melissa.  They’re cool and they’re coming to Astoria to see my smiling face.

The last time all of us, including Linh and Jihye, were in NYC was back in 2003.  We were on our way to Lake George after completing our first year at UVA.  Of course, we stopped in NYC to visit Jihye’s family – but the visit was so short, it was kinda hard to have a good time.  It was hot, directions were confusing, and no one was happy.

Anyway, it’s time to enjoy NYC… 6 years later.  Unfortunately, Linh and Jihye won’t be joining us, but maybe one day. It will still be a good time.

Two weeks after Emily and Melissa stop in, I’m flying to Miami to visit Linh.  Hooray for a short vacation :)  It’ll be my first trip to Miami, and apparently we’re already making plans to take a day cruise to the Bahamas!  Obviously, lots of fun will be had.

Hooray for good times with (part of) the 4747 crew.  It’s hard to believe we’ve been friends for 7 years.  Now I feel old.

deva in da’ house

20 February, 2009 Deva 1 comment

That’s right, suckas. I’m back. Broken, but back.

The past, umm… forever, has been pretty hellish. You can blame my job for everything. Everything.

Quick run through of what I’ve been up to:

1. I moved to Astoria (loving it)

2. I’ve been working 12+ hour days since February 5th (f that)

3. I found an eye doctor and my vision hasn’t changed! (I know no one actually cares about this – but it’s an exciting thing for me)

4. Beth and Rob (College Park roommate and her fiancee) came to visit (awesome). I got to address their wedding invites :)

5. I took my very first boxing class (so… much… pain)

And here I am today. The boxing class was last night, so I’m still suffering from the effects. Walking down the stairs has never been more painful, and I’m scared of getting run over on the subway. I plan on taking this boxing class until I don’t hurt anymore.

Anyway, what’s on my mind nowadays? Hmm…

In the past 48 hours, I’ve been doing a lot of event planning. Adam, Ryan and I are going to Atlanta. We’re also going to see Watchmen IMAX style. And then we’re going to Europe in May?

Yeah – I don’t know about the Europe thing. Student loans are a real downer. I need to start saving up for my blogger trip to Chi-Town in June anyway. Right now, I want to focus on US-travel.

I’m also planning Selection Weekend (April 30-May 2) at my job. It’s the final deliberation round before we pick our new 2009 fellows. There’s also a cocktail party. Get excited.

So, life in Astoria is about 2 gazillion times better than living in Ridgewood. My roommates are normal and I don’t feel the need to stay in my room all the time. I also have a normal sized shower. On the whole, I’m much happier here.

In other random news, I bought The Lonely Island’s first album, Incredibad. This was probably my first impulse buy of 2009 (I’m really glad it only cost me $9). I can’t say I regret the purchase – how else would I get all of my favorite SNL digital shorts as an MP3 (except “Iran So Far”, sadly).

Yes, I’m a nerd. And I laugh at almost anything.

My two favorites are Sax Max (featuring Jack Black) and Boombox.

PS: I love Andy Samberg.

Okay – this post is random enough for me to call it quits. I’ll come back when I’m a little more focused.
