craptastic.

This morning, I left Beth and Rob’s place, and as soon as I got on the metro I realized I left my ipod on their coffee table.

Dammit.

Since I left my ipod (and headphones) on their coffee table, I decided to buy a set of headphones from Radio Shack so I could listen to music on my computer. So – I made it to Metro Center, picked up a sandwich from Potbelly’s (my favorite sandwich place in DC) then bought headphones from Radio Shack. When the bus to New York pulled up to the loading area I realized I left my super tasty sandwich at Radio Shack.

F-bomb.

So, now I’m on the bus (I love the wifi on Boltbus) and I’m hungry, thirsy and music-less (when I put my laptop away). I’m actually nervous because I don’t know what to do without my ipod. I don’t know what to think about. The act of “clearing my head” normally involves listening to music for hours on end. Listening to my ipod is one of the reasons why I continue to exist.

I have 3 more hours on this bus, then a ton of errands (requiring a ton of time on the subway) to take care of before Peter arrives at noon tomorrow. How will I survive with out my mobile music device? Oh gosh…

I have an “Adele” station on my pandora.com music thingy, and for some reason they play at lot of Amy Winehouse. But not the Back to Black Amy Winehouse… the debut Amy Winehouse:

amy

This is the good stuff. The first song I heard off of this album was “Help Yourself”… and I was almost instantly a fan. It took a while because I really don’t like the “Rehab” Amy. She’s so creepy and frighteningly thin.

Anyways, I found this CD the other day in the Virgin Records Megastore for $10 (The UK version, I think). Sadly, the US version doesn’t have “Help Yourself”, so this was the one I wanted :)

I recommend Help Yourself, F – k Me Pumps and Stronger than Me.

soundtrack of my life

8 November, 2008 Deva Leave a comment

My mind and my body were never really in the same place today, which made work exceedingly difficult.

For some reason, I was thinking about which songs I would include on my “soundtrack of my life” cd.

I know I’m weird, but whatever. Here’s my list:

  • Wish I May - Ani Difranco
  • Lucky  - The infamous Britney Spears
  • Living on a Prayer - Bon Jovi
  • I’m Your Angel - Celine Dion and R. Kelly
  • Reflection - Christina Aguilera
  • Close Every Door – from “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”
  • Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me – Elton John
  • Somebody to Love – Queen
  • Man in the Mirror – Michael Jackson
  • Hero – Mariah Carey

Yeah. That’s all I came up with.

FYI: these songs don’t really represent my life, they just conjure up random memories of various point in my life. Sometimes it’s cool.

random in my head

1 November, 2008 Deva Leave a comment

I’ve been downloading the most random assortment of music lately.

Example – Here’s a list of the songs I just downloaded:

  • On The Street Where You Live – Dean Martin
  • Edge of Seventeen – Stevie Nicks
  • Roots (the entire CD) – Curtis Mayfield
  • Glitter in the Air – P!nk

What is going on in my brain?

evening commute

18 September, 2008 Deva Leave a comment

Between the 1 train and the 7 train, I ran into these guys (and ladies)*:

How fantastic!

I almost walked by without stopping to listen, but when I saw the massive crowd of people waiting for the 7, I knew it would be best to stop and listen before going downstairs. My favorite part, of course, was the girl jamming on the trombone. My second favorite part was the dude on the bari sax (who was also jamming).

My third favorite part was the dude who managed to put together (almost) an entire drum set on his base drum. Of course there were 2 other drummers, but their drums weren’t nearly as cool as the bass drum.

Just seeing the band kinda made my day.

*Unfortunately, they started playing something way cooler as soon as I had to catch the train. Lame.

questions about my music.

21 August, 2008 Deva 3 comments

First of all, thanks to Matt for these questions. I love blogging about my music (I think).

Anyway, I feel like I’m about to reveal a lot about myself. My music is very representative of who I am. If I could list every song in my itunes library, you all would know everything about me… kinda. Anyways, please don’t hate on my music. I might cry.

Q: If someone new were in your car, what song on your player would you be the quickest to skip out of embarrassment:

A: Dolly Parton’s “Jesus and Gravity”. Yikes.

Q: What song or songs is/are most “atypical” on your player?

A: Once again, this award goes to my collection of Dolly Parton… Adam gave me one of her CDs. Wow. I fail.

Q: What song(s) on your player turns you on?

A: I’ll just label this question “most romantic song” because none of my songs turn me on. So my answer – maybe Gavin DeGraw’s “More Than Anyone”.

Q: If you wanted to get a member of the opposite sex in the mood, what song would you program to come on when they are in the car?

A: That totally depends on the guy. I can’t answer this question without more detail about who the guy is.

Q: What is the longest song on your player?

A: “Rite of Spring” from Disney’s Fantasia (performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra). 22 minutes 28 seconds. Booya.

Q: What do you think is the silliest song on your player?

A: Hahaha – “Don’t Fall In Love With A Homo” by Jonny McGovern. This is one of the most ridiculous songs I’ve bought… except it’s also amazing (and full of good advice to straight women).

Q: What did you most recently add to your player?

A: So, I’m a part of this group that reviews random CDs every two weeks, and our most recent CD is “Með Suð Í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust” (English: With a Buzz in Our Ears We Play Endlessly) by Sigur Rós. I have no clue what the lead singer is saying, but it’s beautiful.

Q: What did you most recently delete?

A: I can’t remember. When a song is deleted from my itunes playlist, it’s also deleted from my memory.

Q: What is your favorite song on your player that is from a movie?

A: THIS IS A HARD QUESTION. I almost don’t want to answer this because I feel like every song is in a movie at some point. The winner goes to “Good Morning” from Singin’ In the Rain only because it’s my favorite movie of all time.

Q: Is there a song on your player that is only there for someone else’s benefit?

A: No. Sometimes I download songs because other people/my friends like them (eventually I end up liking them too), but that’s about it.

Q: What song or artist do you find yourself skipping most frequently and therefor should probably delete?

A: No – this question doesn’t apply to me. When I skip songs, it’s because I’m not in the mood to listen to them at that point in time. Eventually I’ll be ready to listen again. And why would I delete my songs? That’s like throwing away money.

Q: Without cheating, start your player and list the first 10 songs that come up in random play.

A: Crap. I was afraid of this.

1. Gwen Stefani “Wonderful Life”

2. KT Tunstall “Another Place to Fall”

3. Celine Dion “Taking Chances” (haha)

4. Barbra Streisand “You’ll Never Walk Alone” (oh gosh…)

5. Harry Connick Jr. “But Not For Me”

6. Ani DiFranco “Cloud Blood”

7. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat “The Brothers Come to Egypt – Grovel, Grovel” (awesome)

8. MIKA “Stuck In the Middle”

9. Clay Aiken “Shine” (oh dear God…)

10. John Mayer Trio “Another Kind of Green”

———

Wow. I feel vulnerable. I think I’ll lay off the entries about music for a while…

F-L-O-B-O-T-S

7 August, 2008 Deva 2 comments

I went to see Flobots at the Bowery Ballroom on Tuesday night and it was pretty awesome.

the only clear picture of the evening...

My only qualm was the intense political-ness of a couple of their songs. Other than that, I feel like my $22 was well spent. My favorite song was definitely Rise, but I also have a secret love for The Rhythm Method and another song they did (I can’t remember) that was in a crazy time signature. These guys (and lady) are extremely talented.

I guess I owe Adam a couple of hours of niceness (we’re pretty mean to each other… all the time) for finding these tickets on Ebay. We unknowingly decided to buy the tickets after they were already sold out. That’s just our luck, I guess.

mixwit.com = a new way to spend my late nights when I’m not doing anything important.

Check out my first ever online mix tape! ahora – recents

By the way, there are a few of my faves that didn’t make it to the list this time. Perhaps I’ll get them later.

busy bee

26 May, 2008 Deva Leave a comment

The past few days have been crazy busy… sorta. I was graced with the company of some of my closest friends for my graduation (and the week prior), so I haven’t been glued to my computer in my normal fashion.

The post-school fun kinda started on Wednesday when Adam and I went shopping for work clothes. He ended up buying much more than me – but actually has a job. Me – I’m still unemployed, so I only left with a shirt and chinos from Banana Republic and a skirt from New York and Company (to wear for graduation). After a long day of stimulating the economy, we got back to my apartment just in time for David Cook and David Archuleta’s Guitar Hero commercials…

I flipped out when I saw these commercials.

Thursday morning, after brief water problems (a pipe burst in my building so they shut off the water for a while), Adam and I headed for the District. The trip wasn’t really as adventerous as we’d hoped, but we made a pilgrimage to Vapiano’s for some not-so-fast food pasta. Anyone craving pasta for a low price (with free gummy bears for dessert) should head to that place. We hit up a few more stores, then returned to home base to begin Music Downloading Fest 2008.

We cashed in our change at Coinstar for amazon gift cards… which meant a night of reviewing and downloading music. One of our favorites was Little Jackie – “The World Should Revolve Around Me”. We fell victim to its catchy-ness, I guess. I grew attached to this one:

Oh Kate Nash…

So yeah, eventually Adam got the munchies (for lack of a better word), so we made an emergency trip to shoppers for some cornbread and lemon cake – Bake Fest 2008. Two hours later, we experienced great disappointment:

That wasn\'t planned

The cornbread turned out okay (yay for Jiffy!), but our lemon cake broke :( At least it was still fun to bake, I guess.

Friday was graduation. It was boring. I was happy some more of my friends got to come to the ceremony: Emily from band and Jessica, my “sister from another mother”, and her mom. Then my parents took even more of my friends (474-7 HOLLA) and I out for a ridiculous feast at Maggiano’s. I almost died every time they brought out another course… the amount of food we got was pure insanity. For dessert the waiter brought out a graduation cake (about 7″ high) for me with super cool candles. Even with 10 people eating, I have about 10 separate containers of leftovers…

On Saturday, Adam left me (sniffle) and Jessica and I had some time to hang out. This began DC Photo Fest 2008:

Her camera was much better than mine.

We hit up Zaytinya (of course) for an awesome lunch – with even more pictures…

After lunch, we roamed Georgetown, where Jessica started to get a little tired of walking. So, we visited the waterfront, took some more pictures, then finished up DC Photo Fest 2008.

I don’t have as many pictures from the rest of the day – but we hit up Beth’s (one of my roommates) graduation party, ate some Japanese for dinner, and finally threw in the towel.

Jessica and her mom left pretty early on Sunday morning, so here I am again – in front of my computer. Just like the good old days… minus the constant memo writing.

guilty pleasures

25 April, 2008 Deva 2 comments

In case you didn’t know, I’m a sucker for catchy songs, both good and bad. So is my friend, Adam.

He sends me some of the worst songs I’ve ever come across. How he finds them is beyond me, but I have a tendency to get sucked into their catchy-ness.

Example 1:

Tila Tequila. That bisexual bundle of “joy” (not really) has a (crappy) song entitled “I Love U”. I probably would’ve never heard this song if it hadn’t been for Adam. The lyrics are beyond ridiculous, but the song itself is just so catchy – I couldn’t help but learn all the words.

Example 2 (the most recent):

“Smell Yo Dick”. Yes, this is a real song. I don’t really know what to say… just watch the video. Unfortunately, I’ve fallen victim to this song’s catchy beat as well… thanks to Adam.

***Side note: Sometimes he sends me normal songs.

The fact that “Smell Yo Dick” is suck in my head right now is 100% Adam’s fault. I’m having a hard time concentrating on this paper I should be writing.
