For the Bible Tells Me So

I heard about this movie a few months ago and I finally watched it last night. Not surprisingly, this movie got really positive reviews. I really enjoyed it.

Rather than give a less-than-stellar summary of the movie (the film’s website would be a much better read), I’ll spill my thoughts.

First of all, I have a COMPLETELY different view of James Dodson - 100% negative. I never really followed the guy’s teachings, but I know my parents read some of his stuff. My parents and I need to talk, because I don’t want my parents to have anything to do with a guy who encourages parents to not support their children solely because they’re gay. The part towards the end when the Reitans stood in front of the Focus on the Family building while the mother read her letter to Mr. Dodson was so moving. She had the type of unconditional love for her son that I wish all mothers and fathers would have for their gay children. I was completely blown away.

Bishop Gene Robinson. What a remarkable man. I was in absolute awe of his story from start to finish. One can only hope to, one day, have the same level of courage and ambition and faith and love as he does.

This movie is a very good example of how powerful the Bible is in American society. It’s really frightening to see how people can take a number of Bible verses completely out of context and use them against an entire classification of people. Just like the religious leaders said, it was done against black people and women, and now it’s being done against the gay community. It really makes me sick to my stomach.

Why people just can’t accept differences or just look past them completely boggles my brain.
