torn

I’ve been searching for a post-grad job for months now. MONTHS. And you know what? I haven’t landed a single interview.

Is there something wrong with me? Who knows.

Anyway, beyond the “lack of interviews” issue, I have no idea where I will end up after my lease ends in July. I will either end up in Washington DC or New York City. Those are the options. A big part of me really, really needs/wants to get out of the DC Metro area. On the other hand, there’s a small piece of me that really wants to live in Eastern Market. Sure, I never got the chance to really live in the District (I only worked there), and perhaps my view of the area would change - I’m not a huge fan… but now isn’t really the time to give DC that chance.

I really want to explore a new city. New York isn’t 100% “new” for me - I was born there and lived in the Bronx and Manhattan until I was 9. What I’m craving is to experience the city as an adult. I want to explore a completely new environment. I also want to live in a city where stores don’t close at 6pm because the government workers have retreated to suburbia. And did I mention most of my family lives in the NYC/Northern NJ/Connecticut area? I miss them.

Washington DC is okay, I guess. The metro is clean. I know people here (Everyone from UVA ends up here at some point in their lives + current school/work friends). It’s close to my parents’ house (well, not really - but closer than NYC). There are good restaurants. I know my way around…

I think that’s it.

Either way, none of this will matter if I don’t get a job in NYC. Things will be worse if I don’t get a job AT ALL.

when I get bored

If you couldn’t already tell, one of my favorite pastimes is exploring DC (and taking random pictures). Today was no exception - I was in the middle of writing a paper, then felt the urge to go to U Street.

By the way, I was just there last night. And last Thursday.

But first, I had to get some coffee from

Actually I wanted to come here to see a couple of ex-Murky Capitol Hillers, Anne (A-bo) and Reggie (they migrated here for jobs after Murky’s big seizure). Luckily I found Reggie, but no Anne.

After downing my iced latte and super delicious oatmeal raisin cookie (costing me over $5) in under 5 minutes, I made my way to U Street to 3 of my favorite stores in DC:

Go Mama Go!

Home Rule, and

Pulp (my favorite of the 3).

I absolutely love this store. It has the best variety of cards I’ve ever seen. They also have a lot of quirky things…

Yeah.

Despite my urge to buy these lovely Mexican wrestler heads, I left with only 2 cards.

And that was the end of my homework break.

One ticket to heaven, please

that\'s my mass pass

Yeah, I got my ticket to heaven, the Mass Pass. Nine dollars of eternal life…

I was kinda hoping for a prettier card, but you just don’t question God. He does what He wants, you know.

***Side note: I didn’t just buy the mass pass - I used it too. I spent the day all over the DC metro area. It was great. I’m glad the weather wasn’t cold and rainy like my last DC adventure.

how did it go?

Well, my presentation went okay. A few things actually worked in my favor:

- I had something to lean against, which minimized the rocking

- I remembered to look at my notes; however, I skipped a lot of things I wrote on them

- I didn’t ramble

People asked questions, which shows that people cared enough to listen (yay), but I didn’t have many answers. Oh well. It’s done.

Starbucks (revisited)

This morning, I broke down and tried the Pikes Place coffee. For some reason I’ve been wildly curious about its taste since its debut a day before my birthday (I was hoping it was Starbucks’ birthday present to me).

I hated it.

(By the way, I drink my coffee sans milk and sugar) The first thing I noticed was its high acidity. I’m okay with high acidity to an extent. Following the acid rush, I tasted that awful burnt flavor that Starbucks is known for… and that’s when I knew. The Pikes Place Roast is complete crap. Then came the nasty aftertaste and the burning throat sensation. Yikes.

*** For everyone who actually enjoys the Pikes Place Roast, more power to you. You all are brave souls.

another random one

are they making out?

One of my roommates got me these salt and pepper shakers from Venice. I know they’re also sold in several places online, but these are special (they’re Italian). Thanks Beth!

Anyway, they’re supposed to be hugging, but every time I look at them I can’t help but think that they’re making out. Except, who would design salt and pepper shakers that “make out” with each other? (Not that hugging salt and pepper shakers are the best idea either, but still…) I can’t bear to separate them, mostly because they look like little leaning ghosts.

So yeah, I can’t wait to start using them in my new apartment (which is 3+ months away). I’m sure they’ll be a good conversation piece.

“adventure” Thursday

Whenever I want to explore DC/Whenever I don’t have class, it’s always cold and rainy (example: today). I think it’s bad luck…

A few days ago, I made the decision to visit the Cherry Blossom Festival on Thursday… so, when I woke up this morning, I put on several layers of clothes, grabbed my umbrella and headed for the Tidal Basin for a photo adventure full of cherry blossoms.

Normally, my DC photo adventures consist of me taking about 15 random pictures of stupid things like dying flowers or street signs, but today I ended up with over 90 pictures of a couple of monuments and cherry blossoms (and my extra trip to the Pentagon City mall). If it hadn’t been cloudy and cold all day, the pictures would’ve looked better. These are my favorites:

Cherry Blossoms!

Cherry Blossoms!

Water!

Cherry blossoms over the tidal basin.

TJ’s Memorial

This picture would’ve been prettier with blue skies.

Washington Monument

The Washington Monument. This also would’ve looked better with blue skies.

Hey TJ

Thanks for the education, TJ!

I hate tourists

I hate tourists. These stupid high schoolers were blocking my view of the awesome old guys playing awesome music.

yellow jackets

I was in desperate need of a spring jacket. Thanks to the Gap, I now own a yellow jacket (I had 2 in the picture because I couldn’t decide on which size to get). I’m naturally drawn to bright colors for some reason…

Oh Abercrombie…

I know an almost potential Abercrombie & Fitch model. He turned them down. I like to make fun of him. This picture could’ve been of him… but it’s of some other (kinda creepy and half naked) dude.

Dear Blog,

I haven’t forgotten about you, I swear. I know I made the pact that I would try to write about somewhat interesting things on a regular basis, but something has come up… I have a ginormous midterm tomorrow in my international development economics class. And God only knows what I’m actually being tested on.

Basically, I’ve been studying my brains out for the past few days and seriously neglecting you. I’m really sorry. I’ve been neglecting other things too, like food and sleep and applying for jobs, if it makes you feel any better. After tomorrow at 9:30pm, I will be a better person, I promise.

Love,

Deva
