No thanks, McDonald’s

This is a McDonald’s Southern Style Chicken Sandwich… and it’s completely lame.

Never in a million years will I find 2 pickles and a piece of deep fried chicken between a stale-looking hamburger bun appetizing. Ewww.

But have you seen the ridiculous commercials? I mean, I know most McDonald’s commercials feature Blacks and Hispanics and play into almost every stereotype, but I almost threw up when I saw the commercial with the 2 Black women talking about “Grandma’s Fried Chicken”…

Wtf. No.

I wanted to violently punch whoever thought that commercial was a good marketing idea. NOT EVERY BLACK PERSON ENJOYS FRIED CHICKEN. And the Black people who do enjoy fried chicken on a regular basis are not going to McDonalds for that nasty sandwich (I hope).

This just about sums up how I’m feeling:

This series of advertisements for the Southern Style Chicken Sandwich has served as another reminder to me that when it comes to selling products to the public, people of color are still horribly misrepresented. - LaShonna McBride, The Easterner - June 4, 2008

I will spend my life fighting these stupid stereotypes…

*** Side note: As a Black woman who enjoys her grandma’s fried chicken (maybe once a year), I bet that crap McDonald’s sandwich doesn’t even come close in deliciousness to my Grandma’s awesome chicken.

Ugh I couldn’t agree more on how gross it is.

And as for marketing stereotypes–I had no idea about the stereotype of black people liking chicken, until one of my roomies informed me of it one day…and thus I noticed the commercial and learned that McDonald’s commercials are a great way to learn about stereotypes…

It is certainly a shame though!!

    Um… I LOVE that sandwich.

    I had one tonight.

I’ve had at least one a week since I first heard about it.

(FYI, my girlfriend also thinks it’s completely lame, and SHE says it’s because she’s from California, and she doesn’t understand the appeal)

Deva, eat one before you judge!!!

Trish calls it “The Chickenburger,” and now so do I.

She keeps asking, “But WHY do you like it?”

    I like it because it’s yummy. :-)

    The End.

I think we all know how racist I am towards Deva, and yet even I object to the stereotyping on her behalf.

Seriously, what’s with people thinking that the backs like pickles? Ew.

Deva, don’t start doing things before you judge them. You’ll lose the Deva-quality that I so love. And you’ll also gain like 200lbs and end up like the guy with the molester-style ’stache who did that whole “Super Size-Me”-bull. Also, you’ll end up running into Nick Cho, apparently at 4am in Adam’s Morgan, getting his fix. Strung out. Grease stained lips. Crying for his Southern Mama.

1.the pickle thing on a fried sandwich is a regional thing in parts of the South, especially places like Louisiana and also in NC, SC. This sandwich is based on a Southern regional chain called Chick Fila–which is famous for its chicken breast sandwiches with pickles and is very popular in NC, etc. McDonalds was looking for a substitute for its poor selling McChicken as the hot category in fast food currently is chicken. This sandwich is good–way better than the McChicken and is an exact duplication of the famous Chik Fila sandwich. It is juicy but not greasy but it is loaded with calories.

2.I also think the ads are stereotypical and are ludicrous as Grandma’s fried chicken is not a breast filet on a processed bun. However, McDonald’s knows from corporate research that blacks are some of their most loyal customers and research shows that black people like to see themselves in advertising just like anyone else. Also, black people have been historically associated with fried chicken in the minds of some of the public so McDonald’s is killing two birds with one stone–they appeal to a big part of their loyal customer base AND try to establish their sandwich as legtimately southern by linking it to black people on the ad. I find it offensive, too.
